CarPlay vs Android Auto: Which is Better in 2025?

infotainment Difficulty: beginner

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compared: features, interface, wireless support, and which is better for your daily drive and road trips.

The Two Ecosystems

CarPlay and Android Auto both project your phone's apps onto your car's infotainment screen. They've matured significantly and now handle navigation, music, calls, and messaging with minimal distraction. But they're not identical, and your choice largely comes down to which phone you carry.

Navigation

CarPlay: Apple Maps has improved dramatically — it now offers lane guidance, speed camera alerts, and EV routing. Google Maps and Waze are available too. The new CarPlay (coming in 2025+ vehicles) integrates maps directly into the instrument cluster.

Android Auto: Google Maps is the default and it's still the best navigation app overall. Waze integration is tighter. Google's real-time traffic data remains superior in most regions.

Winner: Android Auto, narrowly — Google Maps is still the gold standard for navigation accuracy.

Music & Podcasts

Both support Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Audible, and most major podcast apps. The interfaces are nearly identical. Slight edge to CarPlay for Apple Music integration, slight edge to Android Auto for YouTube Music.

Winner: Tie

Messaging

CarPlay: iMessage integration is seamless. Siri reads and composes messages well. Third-party app support (WhatsApp, Signal) is good.

Android Auto: Google Assistant handles messaging across more apps. RCS messaging is built in. Works well with WhatsApp and Telegram.

Winner: Depends on your messaging platform

Wireless Support

Both now support wireless connections in most 2023+ vehicles. If your car only has wired support, wireless adapters ($50-100) work reliably for both. Wireless CarPlay drains iPhone battery faster — keep a cable handy for long drives.

Verdict

Use whatever matches your phone. Both are excellent in 2025, and the differences are marginal. If you're buying a car, make sure it supports both — most modern vehicles do. The real upgrade is going from a car's built-in system to either CarPlay or Android Auto.
