Glacier National Park road trip itinerary: Going-to-the-Sun Road without a vehicle reservation
A 3-day Glacier road trip built around current NPS rules: no Going-to-the-Sun Road vehicle reservation, three-hour Logan Pass parking and ticketed shuttles.
You do not need a vehicle reservation to drive Going-to-the-Sun Road. Glacier National Park dropped its vehicle reservation system for the entire park in 2026, and as of November 2026 it has not announced any 2027 system. What you do need to plan for are the newer rules. From July 1 to Labor Day, private-vehicle parking at Logan Pass is capped at three hours. The only shuttle on the road is a ticketed express to Logan Pass. Rangers can also temporarily divert traffic when areas fill. This 3-day road trip itinerary is built around those rules.
The route is a loop of about 240 miles from Glacier Park International Airport near Kalispell. It crosses the park on Going-to-the-Sun Road, spends a day on the east side at Many Glacier, and returns on US 2. Treat the 2026 details below as the baseline. Glacier called the shuttle and parking changes a pilot, so confirm 2027 dates when the park publishes them, usually in late winter.
Going-to-the-Sun Road vehicle reservation: the rules now
| Rule | 2026 details (NPS) | What it means for your trip |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle reservations | Not required anywhere in the park, including Going-to-the-Sun Road, Many Glacier, Two Medicine and the North Fork. | Enter at any hour with a valid entrance pass. No 2027 rule has been announced. |
| Logan Pass parking | Three-hour maximum, July 1 to Sept 7, enforced 24 hours a day. Take a free timestamped permit from the kiosk and display it on the dashboard. | Enough for Hidden Lake Overlook or the visitor center, not for the Highline Trail. |
| Logan Pass shuttle | Ticket required for everyone age 2 and older. $1 Recreation.gov fee per ticket. Runs July 1 to Sept 7. | Book if you plan a long hike from Logan Pass. Tickets are not sold in the park. |
| Ticket release | Part released 60 days ahead at 8 a.m. MDT (rolling, from May 2); the rest at 7 p.m. MDT the night before (from June 30). | Set alarms for both windows. |
| Vehicle size | Over 21 ft long (including bumpers) or 8 ft wide (including mirrors) prohibited between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun. Over 10 ft tall may struggle west of Logan Pass. | Most cars and SUVs are fine. Many camper vans and RVs are not. |
| Congestion closures | Vehicles may be temporarily diverted when areas reach capacity. Visitors with lodging, camping, boat tour or other service reservations are let through but may be delayed. | Arrive early or late, and keep a booking confirmation handy. |
| Nonresident fee | $100 per non-U.S. resident aged 16 and over, on top of the entrance fee, or covered by the $250 nonresident annual pass. | International visitors should price in the pass. |
Two more facts shape every day: there are no gas stations inside Glacier, and cell service is unreliable. Fill up in West Glacier, Columbia Falls or St. Mary, and save tickets and maps offline. For how Glacier compares with parks that still require reservations, such as Rocky Mountain, see national parks that require reservations in 2027.
When to go
The alpine section of Going-to-the-Sun Road does not usually open until late June at the earliest. The park says it is typically fully open by early July, but snow and avalanches can push that later. Crews clear about 40 avalanche paths each spring. The alpine section typically closes around the third Monday of October, or earlier if winter weather arrives. For a trip that reliably crosses Logan Pass, aim for mid-July to mid-September. Text GNPROADS to 333111 for road opening and closing alerts.
If you want to avoid the Logan Pass parking cap and shuttle system entirely, the 2026 rules ended after Labor Day (September 7). September brings fewer crowds and fall color, at the cost of shorter days and a chance of early snow.
Glacier National Park itinerary: 3 days
Day 1: Kalispell to West Glacier and Lake McDonald (about 30 miles)
Glacier Park International Airport is about 30 miles west of the West Entrance. Pick up your rental car, fuel up and stock food and water in Kalispell or Columbia Falls. Enter at West Glacier, stop at the Apgar Visitor Center, and spend the afternoon on Lake McDonald.
In the late afternoon, drive the lower Going-to-the-Sun Road along Lake McDonald to Avalanche Creek. This matters more than it used to: in 2026, the park shuttle did not stop at Avalanche Lake or the Trail of the Cedars, so your own car is the only way to reach them. Parking fills early, so an evening visit is easier. Stay in West Glacier, Apgar, Columbia Falls or Whitefish.
Day 2: Going-to-the-Sun Road to St. Mary (50 miles, allow a full day)
The NPS estimates West Glacier to St. Mary over Going-to-the-Sun Road at 50 miles and about two hours of pure driving. Speed limits are 40 mph in the lower sections and 25 mph in the alpine section. Plan on a full day with stops.
Pick one of two strategies:
- Early start, short Logan Pass visit. Leave West Glacier around sunrise and reach Logan Pass before the lot fills. Your three hours are enough to walk to Hidden Lake Overlook and visit the visitor center. Then continue east, stopping at Siyeh Bend, Jackson Glacier Overlook, Sunrift Gorge and St. Mary Lake (Wild Goose Island).
- Shuttle for the Highline Trail. If you want the Highline Trail to Granite Park Chalet or down to the Loop, book a Logan Pass shuttle ticket. In 2026, west-side shuttles left Apgar Visitor Center at 6, 7, 9 and 10 a.m. and Lake McDonald Lodge at 7 and 9 a.m. The last westbound shuttle left Logan Pass at 7:30 p.m. Missing it leaves you with no public transport back to your car. On a shuttle day, drive across to St. Mary that evening or the next morning.
Overnight in St. Mary or nearby Babb. Fuel is available in St. Mary but not inside the park.
Day 3: Many Glacier, then back west on US 2 (about 160 miles)
Many Glacier is 20 miles (about 40 minutes) from St. Mary. No vehicle reservation was required in 2026, but the valley's lots fill early and rangers may divert cars when it is at capacity. Arrive early for Swiftcurrent Lake, Grinnell Lake or Iceberg Lake trails. Having a boat tour or lodging reservation in the valley lets you through a temporary closure, though you may be delayed.
In the afternoon, return to St. Mary and drive back to West Glacier on US 89 and US 2, which the NPS lists as 90 miles and about two hours. Continue 30 miles to the airport, or add a fourth day. Two Medicine, 34 miles from St. Mary, is the quieter alternative to Many Glacier.
Optional day 4: Two Medicine or the North Fork
Two Medicine has shorter lines and good lake hikes. The North Fork and Polebridge are 28 miles (about an hour) from West Glacier, mostly on gravel. Both were reservation-free in 2026, and both can be closed temporarily when full.
Driving distances and fuel
| Leg | Miles (NPS) | Approx. time (NPS) |
|---|---|---|
| Glacier Park International Airport to West Entrance | 30 | not listed |
| West Glacier to St. Mary via Going-to-the-Sun Road | 50 | 2 hr driving |
| St. Mary to Many Glacier and back | 40 | 1 hr 20 min |
| St. Mary to West Glacier via US 89 and US 2 | 90 | 2 hr |
| West Glacier to airport | 30 | not listed |
| Loop total | about 240 |
Fuel estimate: 240 miles at 30 mpg is 8 gallons. At the AAA Montana average of $4.26 per gallon on November 4, 2026, that is about $34. Gas prices change, and park driving at low speeds with climbs will vary.
What drivers report
Recent reviews from the 2026 season, the first without vehicle reservations, show what the new system feels like on the ground.
- A visitor in July 2026, on TripAdvisor, entered after 2 p.m. and saw little traffic beyond the entrance. They recommend driving east to west if anyone in the car is nervous about heights, because the westbound lane hugs the cliff.
- A couple who drove in July 2026, writing on TripAdvisor, warned of three things. With buses and trucks, the road can narrow to almost one lane. Congestion builds heavily near Logan Pass. And there are sheer drop-offs, though always behind some kind of barrier.
- An August 2026 reviewer on TripAdvisor said to plan a full day. They saw nervous drivers drifting over the center line on tight stretches, leaving too little room for oncoming cars.
- A June 2026 visitor on TripAdvisor arrived while the road was still closed. They signed up for text alerts and got a notice just before 5 p.m. that it had opened. They found wind and snow at Logan Pass, and suggested downloading the NPS app for offline maps.
What to watch out for
- Treating the three-hour limit as a daytime-only rule. One reviewer above suggested you would not need a timed spot later in the day. The NPS says the limit is enforced 24 hours a day from July 1 to September 7, so always take a kiosk permit. Overnight parking at Logan Pass is only allowed for permitted backcountry users and Granite Park Chalet guests.
- Planning the Highline as a drive-up hike. It usually takes longer than three hours, so you need a shuttle ticket or a drop-off.
- Assuming the shuttle stops everywhere. In 2026 it ran express to Logan Pass with only The Loop as an intermediate stop. It did not stop at Avalanche Lake or Trail of the Cedars.
- Booking an early-season trip around Logan Pass. If the alpine section has not opened, you can only drive the lower ends of the road.
- Bringing a vehicle over 21 feet. Rangers will not let it past Avalanche Creek or Rising Sun. Many Class C motorhomes and long vans with bike racks exceed the limit.
- Running low on fuel or data. There is no gas in the park, and cell coverage is patchy. Print or screenshot shuttle tickets before you lose signal.
Bottom line
You can drive Going-to-the-Sun Road without a vehicle reservation. That has been the case since the 2026 season, and no 2027 change has been announced. Plan the trip around Logan Pass instead. Arrive early for a three-hour visit, book a $1 shuttle ticket if you want the Highline Trail, and use your own car for Avalanche Lake. A 3-day loop from Kalispell through St. Mary and Many Glacier covers the highlights in about 240 miles. If Glacier is one stop on a longer western trip, the Utah Mighty 5 road trip and the Grand Canyon North Rim road trip cover other parks with their own 2026 changes.
