National parks that require reservations in 2027: a road tripper's planner

Route Denver, CO → Rocky Mountain National Park (Estes Park), CO
Distance 66 miles
Estimated fuel $9

Which national parks need timed entry or vehicle reservations for 2027, which systems are confirmed and which are not yet announced, plus the $100 nonresident fee and how to plan around it.

As of November 4, 2026, no national park has published a 2027 timed-entry or vehicle-reservation system yet. The national parks that required reservations in 2026 were Rocky Mountain (park-wide timed entry, two permit types) and Acadia (Cadillac Summit Road only), plus activity-specific reservations at Haleakalā (sunrise), Zion (Angels Landing) and Glacier (Logan Pass shuttle tickets). Arches, Yosemite, Mount Rainier and Glacier all dropped vehicle reservations for 2026. If you are planning a 2027 road trip, the safest assumption is that each park repeats its 2026 rules until it announces otherwise, and most announcements land between January and March.

This planner sorts what is confirmed from what is not, so you can build a route now and fill in reservation dates later. It covers the parks road trippers ask about most, the separate $100 nonresident fee, and how to sequence a multi-park drive around booking windows.

National parks that require reservations in 2027: announced vs not yet announced

The table below separates rules that already apply to 2027 dates from systems that only exist on paper for 2026. "Not yet announced" means the park's own NPS pages still described the 2026 season as of early November 2026. Figures and dates can change; always confirm on the park's site before you book.

ParkWhat was required in 20262027 status (as of Nov 4, 2026)
Rocky Mountain (CO)Timed entry 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 22 to Oct 12; Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 22 to Oct 18. $2 Recreation.gov fee.Not yet announced. The system comes from a 2024 Day Use Visitor Access Plan, so a 2027 version is likely but dates are unpublished.
Acadia (ME)Cadillac Summit Road vehicle reservation, May 20 to Oct 25. $6 per vehicle. Not yet announced. Has run every season since the 2019 transportation plan.
Glacier (MT)No vehicle reservations anywhere. Ticketed Logan Pass shuttle ($1 per ticket) and three-hour parking at Logan Pass, July 1 to Sept 7.Not yet announced. The 2026 shuttle and parking rules were a pilot.
Arches (UT)No timed entry. Enter any time during operating hours. Not yet announced.
Yosemite (CA)No vehicle reservations. Not yet announced.
Mount Rainier (WA)No timed entry for any part of the park. Not yet announced.
Haleakalā (HI)Sunrise reservation required, booked up to 60 days ahead at 7 a.m. HST, with a share released 2 days ahead.Ongoing rolling system. Early-2027 dates open 60 days out, so January dates are already on sale.
Zion (UT)Angels Landing permit (seasonal and day-before lotteries). No park entry reservation.Announced through winter: the seasonal lottery for Dec 1 to Feb 28 closed Oct 20, 2026. The day-before lottery continues.
Carlsbad Caverns (NM)Timed cave-entry tickets, strongly recommended in advance.Ongoing; check the park before you go.

The key takeaway: in 2027 you will almost certainly need a Rocky Mountain timed entry and an Acadia Cadillac reservation in summer, and you already need one for Haleakalā sunrise and Angels Landing. Everything else is a watch-list item.

Park by park: what road trippers need to know

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain is the one park where a summer road trip still hinges on a reservation. In 2026 there were two products on Recreation.gov: standard Timed Entry, covering everything except Bear Lake Road (including Trail Ridge Road and the west side), and Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road, covering the whole park. Each reservation gives a two-hour entry window and no set exit time. Blocks of dates were released on the first of the prior month at 8 a.m. MDT (May 1 for late May and June, June 1 for July, and so on), with more released at 7 p.m. MDT the night before.

The workaround that matters for drivers: standard timed entry only applied between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. If you arrive before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m., you can drive Trail Ridge Road without one. The Bear Lake corridor has a much longer window (5 a.m. to 6 p.m.), so the "early start" trick does not work there. A Denver base works: the NPS lists Estes Park at about 66 miles from Denver via US 36, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours.

Acadia National Park

Only Cadillac Summit Road needs a vehicle reservation; the rest of Acadia, including Park Loop Road, does not. In 2026, 30 percent of sunrise and daytime slots went on sale 90 days ahead at 10 a.m. ET and 70 percent two days ahead. Reservations cost $6, are sold only on Recreation.gov, and you still need a separate park entrance pass. Vehicles over 21 feet (including bike racks), RVs and trailers are banned on the summit road even with a reservation. Walking, biking or arriving by taxi does not require a reservation.

Glacier National Park

Glacier dropped vehicle reservations park-wide for 2026, including Going-to-the-Sun Road, Many Glacier, Two Medicine and the North Fork. The park instead piloted a ticket-only Logan Pass shuttle and a three-hour cap on private-vehicle parking at Logan Pass from July 1 to September 7. Rangers can still temporarily divert cars when an area fills. For a full itinerary built around these rules, see the Glacier Going-to-the-Sun Road itinerary without a vehicle reservation.

Arches, Yosemite and Mount Rainier

All three dropped timed entry for 2026. Arches told visitors to expect entrance lines on summer weekends and holidays, to arrive early, and to consider after-dark visits. Yosemite's superintendent said park analysis found most weekdays had available parking, and the park encouraged weekday visits. Mount Rainier announced on February 25, 2026 that it would not use timed entry for any part of the park. None had posted a 2027 decision as of early November 2026. If you are combining Arches with the other Utah parks, the Utah Mighty 5 road trip lays out the driving order.

Haleakalā, Zion and Carlsbad Caverns

These require reservations for a specific experience rather than for park entry. Haleakalā requires a sunrise reservation (one per three-day period, not refunded for weather). Zion requires an Angels Landing permit beyond Scout Lookout, but no reservation to enter the park or ride the shuttle. Carlsbad Caverns uses timed cave-entry tickets that should be bought in advance.

Grand Canyon North Rim

The North Rim has no reservation system, but it has a different planning problem: the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge, and the 2026 season ran with no in-park lodging. See the Grand Canyon North Rim road trip guide for what is open.

The nonresident fee and the America the Beautiful pass

Since January 1, 2026, each non-U.S. resident aged 16 and older pays a $100 per-person fee on top of the standard entrance fee at 11 parks: Acadia, Bryce Canyon, Everglades, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Sequoia and Kings Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite and Zion. The America the Beautiful annual pass costs $80 for U.S. residents and $250 for nonresidents. The $250 pass covers the nonresident fee for the whole vehicle. Fee-free days now apply only to U.S. residents.

For an international family of four adults visiting three of those 11 parks, the surcharge alone would be $1,200 without a pass, so the $250 nonresident pass pays for itself at the first park. U.S. residents need proof of residency, such as a U.S. driver's license or passport, to buy the $80 pass.

How to plan a 2027 national park road trip before the rules are out

  1. Fix your route and dates around the two near-certain systems. If Rocky Mountain or Acadia is on the route in summer, put those days in the middle of the trip so you can shift them by a day if your first-choice slot sells out.
  2. Book refundable lodging now. Gateway towns fill before reservation systems are announced. Free cancellation buys you room to adjust once 2027 rules publish.
  3. Set calendar reminders for January to March 2027. In 2026, Arches, Glacier and Yosemite announced on February 18 and Mount Rainier on February 25. Expect a similar window.
  4. Create and test your Recreation.gov account early. Save payment details and know the exact release time in the park's time zone.
  5. Plan an off-hours fallback. In 2026, Rocky Mountain's standard timed entry did not apply before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m., and Glacier visitors could drive in at any hour. Early starts are the most reliable backup.
  6. Download confirmations. Acadia, Glacier and Zion all warn that cell service in the park is unreliable. Print or screenshot QR codes before you lose signal.

Sample worked example: Denver to Rocky Mountain National Park

Using the NPS figure of 66 miles one way from Denver to Estes Park via US 36, a car averaging 30 mpg burns about 2.2 gallons each way. At the AAA national average of $4.12 per gallon on November 4, 2026, that is about $9 one way or $18 round trip. If you cannot get a Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road slot, leave Denver by about 6:30 a.m. to clear the entrance before 9 a.m. and use standard park areas, or drive Trail Ridge Road after 2 p.m.

What travelers report

Recent reviews show how much these rules shape the day, and how quickly they change.

  • A July 2026 visitor to Glacier, writing on TripAdvisor, found that entering after 2 p.m. meant almost no traffic. They described the three-hour Logan Pass cap and the shuttle as the two choices for longer daytime visits.
  • A July 2025 Glacier reviewer on TripAdvisor said they never saw the road-reservation requirement before arriving. They were frustrated to learn the west entrance needed one. That rule was dropped for 2026, which is exactly why yearly rechecking matters.
  • Another July 2025 Glacier visitor on TripAdvisor entered from the east side because it did not need a timed reservation. They drove west and still found plenty of cars despite rain.
  • A June 2026 reviewer of Acadia's Park Loop Road, posted on the TripAdvisor Acadia page, advised driving early in the morning. They described heavy congestion and cars parked in no-parking areas, even though only Cadillac Summit Road needs a reservation.

Common mistakes

  • Using last year's rules. Glacier required vehicle reservations in 2025 and dropped them in 2026; the 2025 reviewer above was caught out the other way. Treat any blog post (including this one) as a starting point and confirm on nps.gov.
  • Confusing an entrance pass with a reservation. At Acadia and Rocky Mountain, the reservation is separate from the entrance fee. You need both.
  • Booking the wrong Rocky Mountain permit. Standard Timed Entry does not include Bear Lake Road. If Bear Lake, Sprague Lake or the Glacier Gorge trailhead is on your list, you need Timed Entry+.
  • Bringing an oversize vehicle. Acadia's summit road bans vehicles over 21 feet, and Glacier's Going-to-the-Sun Road bans vehicles over 21 feet long or 8 feet wide between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun.
  • Forgetting the nonresident surcharge. International visitors who skip the $250 pass can pay $100 per adult at each of the 11 parks.
  • Assuming "no reservation" means no wait. Arches and Glacier both warn of entrance lines and temporary closures when lots fill.

Bottom line

For 2027, plan as if Rocky Mountain timed entry and the Acadia Cadillac Summit Road reservation will return in summer. They have not been announced yet, so watch for dates in early 2027. Haleakalā sunrise and Zion's Angels Landing permits already apply. Glacier, Arches, Yosemite and Mount Rainier ran without vehicle reservations in 2026, but none has committed to 2027 either way. Build your route now, book refundable lodging, set reminders for January to March, and keep an early-morning start as your fallback in every park.
